Bierce, Ambrose and G. A. Danziger The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter Chicago: F. J. Schulte & Company, 1892 First Edition Hard Cover The cloth edition, very good+ lacking a dust jacket. Brownish gray cloth is slightly darkened on spine and at edges, with slight wear in the cloth at the spine ends. Small tears in the cloth at both hinges, but the binding is tight and straight. According to Starrett (pages 35 - 37), who specifically addresses the priority of bindings and who was "...deeply into the question with Mr. Schulte, the publisher..." this cloth binding is the third issue, with two bindings in wraps preceding this issue. However, very few of the wraps issues have survived. An attractive copy. Price:

Bierce, Ambrose and G. A. Danziger The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter Chicago: F. J. Schulte & Company, 1892 First Edition Soft Cover The first issue, very good in the original yellow wraps. Small chip in lower right corner of front cover, with very slight loss at the top of the spine. Pages are uncut at foredge and bottom edge. According to Starrett (pages 35 - 37), who specifically addresses the priority of bindings and who was "...deeply into the question with Mr. Schulte, the publisher..." this binding is the first issue. The second issue, also in wraps, had the title in both red and black type on the front cover, while the first issue has the title all in black (as does this copy). Starrett does state that all three "followed each other closely" and that the only difference is in the covers. However, by its nature the wraps issue is much scarcer today. A solid copy of an ephemeral item in the Bierce canon. Price:
600.00 USD
