Very good lacking a dust jacket. A bookplate (which is still laid in) was attached to the front pastedown. The bookplate eventually became detached, leaving a rectangle of darkened glue on the front pastedown, which offset to the front endpaper (only much lighter). Dark blue cloth with yellow lettering on the spine, lettering is slightly faded. Tight and square copy, 254 pages including an index.

#456 of 1500 of the first edition. Very good copy, lacking the dust jacket. Dark blue boards have some areas that are rubbed or otherwise a lighter blue - could possibly be a very light dampstain. No evidence of dampstaining on the interior of the book. Spine lettering (in light blue) is slightly rubbed, but still clear and legible. Two bookplates and the corner of a small label are on the front pastedown. Laid in is a six page article about Mencken by Carl Van Doren taken from The Century Magazine (undated, but probably the 1920's). Hinges are tight, topstain is still uniformly dark blue, tight and clean on the interior. A cornerstone of any Mencken collection, or any collection on American usage of English.
