Hearn, Lafcadio Japanese Fairy Tales
Tokyo: Hasegawa First Edition Soft Cover
Four volumes, as follows: The Boy Who Drew Cats (1898), first edition in crepe-paper, first state, with the title in one line on the front cover. The Goblin Spider (1899), apparent second crepe-paper edition, with a list on the recto of the rear cover which includes the first 20 titles in the first series, and the first three titles in the second series. However, the English address at the bottom of the page does not match that given in Perkins (see below). The Old Woman Who Lost Her Dumpling (1902), first crepe-paper edition; and Chin Chin Kobakama (1903), apparent first crepe-paper edition, matching Perkins' description in all respects, except the address at the bottom of the recto of the back cover is different than Perkins calls for. There was a fifth title issued in 1922 (The Fountain of Youth), when the first four were being reprinted, but a copy of it is not included. All four copies are in fine condition, with the original silk ties, and just minor wear or creasing. The are housed in a custom made folding chemise, which fits inside a 3/4 leather box with raised bands and ornate gilt decorations on the spine, as well as the author's name, Japanese Fairy Tales, and the dates 1898 - 1903 at bottom. The box has just minor wear at corners and tips. A very nice presentation of the Fairy Tales which were published during Hearn's life (he died in 1904). The only bibliography which deciphers the Japanese colophon information and discusses specific issue points in the various issues is Perkins - Lafcadio Hearn: A Bibliography of His Writings; published originally in 1934 in an edition of 200 copies, and reprinted in 1968.
