Hartford Author Published 1817 First Edition Full-Leather
Very good in original leather boards, with leather spine label reading "Capt. Riley's/Narrative" in gilt. Fairly minor dampstaining at lower corner and foredge of page block, some foxing throughout. All engravings are present, rear map of Africa is missing. Riley and his crew were captured by Arab pirates and made slaves until ultimately freed. His ordeal lasted less than 2 years, but was a part of the American national culture because the book was so heavily reprinted. Abraham Lincoln cited this book as a source for his attitudes on slavery.

First Edition. Near fine in a very good+ dust jacket. Top edge of pages is darkened; the jacket has tiny chips and a little general soiling. The poems were chosen by William Lyon Phelps. Reddish cloth with paper labels on spine and front board, bright and like new.
